Nadia Valsecchi Foundation sponsored a Travel Grant of 4,000 Euros for Marta Chiaravalli, a medical student at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. Marta will spend the next five months at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York working on pancreatic cancer clinical research and preparing her graduate thesis in Medicine.
Here below the story of Marta. We are happy to contribute to the formation of a young doctor who will complete her training in this prestigious research center in the United States.
“I am a student at the school of Medicine and Surgery at University Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan (Italy). Since the first years of my studies I realized that my primary interest was the oncology field, with particular focus on gynecology, urology, gastroenterology. Therefore I joined the Department of Medical Oncology at San Raffaele Hospital, initially focusing on the “liquid tumors” and on “solid tumors” later. At the fifth year of my studies I joined the Oncology department as an internal student under the supervision of Dr. MICHELE RENI. Together with his team I worked directly with patients affected by pancreatic cancer and I joined the clinical research.
Dr. Reni was able to transmit me the passion and strength for this challenging work, therefore I decided that after graduation, scheduled for July 2017, I will continue the medical specialization in oncology.
With the help of Nadia Valsecchi Foundation, I have just arrived in The United States to improve my knowledge on pancreatic cancer, during five months of training experience. In particular, I will follow the work of Dr. EILEEN O’REILLY at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, one of the most prestigious center known for advanced research in oncology. In this center there are numerous ongoing experimental studies for patients with pancreatic cancer. Some of the studies provides both genetic and molecular approaches for the development of new therapies and the identification of new biomarkers, that can be used to select the most suitable treatment for each individual patient.
I’m really glad to have this opportunity to improve my professional growth in such a challenging environment which is the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
I’m sure I’ll learn as much as possible from this experience in order to help patients with pancreatic cancer”.
